Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning, University of Massachusetts at Amherst The status of the bed and breakfast and small inn lodging industry in the Common wealth of Massachusetts was examined. Factors considered to be important were age and size of establishiments, organizational format, rate structure, occupancy rates, guests served, and management staff. Specifically, the study was undertaken to explore various industry characteristics specific to bed and breakfast establishments within Massachusetts and to determine whether any specific relationships or differences existed within the industry according to variables such as regional location, rate structure, and seasonal business patterns.
