Tourism and the European Regional Development Fund: The First Fourteen YearsAfter brief reviews of tourism in the European Community, the evolution of the ERDF and the links between tourism and regional development, this article examines the role of tourism in regional development within the EC through an analysis of tourism projects supported by the ERDF from its establishment in 1975 to the reforms of 1988. This analysis shows tourism has played only a minor role in regional development during this period. Tourist projects have been more significant in declining industrial regions, particularly in the U.K., than in lagging regions, with most support going to projects in the attractions sector.
