Overview of Panama’s Tourism in the Aftermath of the Turnover of the Canal Zone

Matt A. Casado

School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff

This study investigates Panama’s tourism at the time of the takeover of the Canal Zone by the Republic of Panama. This strip of land, which has been under the aegis of the United States since 1903, offers great opportunities for tourism development. The article describes Panama’s goals to redirect the country’s economy to one that relies substantially on revenues from tourism while preserving the isthmus’ exceptional biodiversity.
